Clinical Diagnostics & bioMérieux –

New [MSC] Newsletter & Milestones

or: The Netherlands, revisited

If you do not wish to receive this newsletter anymore, just reply to this mail without any comment and you will be taken off the mailing list.

-----------------------------

Dear reader,

right now eveybody seems to move into clinical diagnostics, so we took the opportunity to take a look at a company who has always been there:
bioMérieux S.A., France

In April alone bioMérieux announced two interesting deals to expand its own technology base:

– a collaboration with Knome (US) in DNA Sequencing and  the

– purchase of a spectral library from AnagnosTec (Germany) for mass spectrometry.

bioMérieux S.A.. (4/21/10). "Press Release: bioMérieux and Knome Sign Startegic Partnership". Marcy l’Etoile & Cambridge, MA.

bioMérieux S.A.. (4/12/10). "Press Release: bioMérieux Acquires from AnagnosTec Database and Expertise for Rapid Microbial Identification Using Mass Spectrometry". Marcy l’Etoile.

»gene-sensor« has more than 70 deals on file for bioMérieux and a fine selection will be presented below.

In addition: this [gs] newsletter will elaborate on two other things:

1)     Mass-Spec-Capital.com

Our new web portal today reached a defining first milestone covering more than 1,000 organisations related to mass spectrometry as of today!

In addition, Mass-Spec-Capital will launch a free, monthly [MSC] Newsletter this month. You can subscribe at www.mass-spec-capital.com

2)      The Netherlands and [gs]

[gs] now offers access to 350+ life sciences organisations from Holland directly via provinces and towns.

With this [gs] offers regional data for all German-speaking countries, the UK, North America and The Netherlands! Other European countries will follow soon.

---------------------------------------------------

a) Clinical Diagnostics and bioMérieux

In these times everybody seems to move into clinical diagnostics. The reason (I suspect): this is the right (hype) time for personalised medicine! And diagnostics (as well as vaccines) are great markets to enter because you don't have to restrict your marketing to persons that are "really ill", in fact, with the right marketing you can sell your vaccine and test to anybody – sick or healthy – all around the world!

While in principle preventing disease should be less costly than treating disease, in "reality" – and this will be true at least for the next years – the move into broad diagnostic screening campaigns is likely to let healthcare costs explode in the rich countries. For the poor countries the old wisdom holds true: buy and finance education instead of medicines.

There are several reasons for this, like follow-up costs, legal issues, social behavior, players in relevant markets etc., that have to be discussed in other contexts in more depth.

Anyway, bioMérieux, a French firm, has been a key player in clinical diagnostics (the traditional way, i.e. testing only people with a suspected disease, not population wide screening!) for many decades.

While other move into clinical diagnostics, bioMérieux has been there for a long time and reaches out to relevant technologies to round up its own product and technology portfolio and has done some interesting deals in the last few months.

The following transactions are just some intriguing examples, there were even more deals!

[iito] is constantly expanding its depth of regional coverage. Coverage in general is worldwide ever since we started back in 2002, with a clear focus on Europe and North America.

As of today we are proud to announce that The Netherlands are the latest country that has been broken down to federal states or provinces within the [gs] database.

Now the country "The Netherlands" looks like this with gene-sensor.com *
