Dear reader,

just last month Abbott started a cash tender offer for Facet Biotech; a company Biogen Idec tried to acquire before with an unsuccessful, unfriendly bid.

This latest acquisition of Abbott is the last "pearl" in a string of deals that maybe really started with Abbott’s acquisition of Guidant’s vascular business announced back in January 2006

Abbott. (1/8/06). "Press Release: Abbott to Acquire Guidant Vascular Business Contingent Upon Close of Boston Scientific's Proposed Acquisition of Guidant". Abbott Park, IL....

The news of further acquisitions by Abbott became more interesting and interesting ever since that acquisition.

The Abbott Strategy

In my view, the recent strategy of Abbott is unique in the whole health care industry as the company buys assets in a diverse range of technologies (from biologicals to generics, from molecular diagnostics to medical devices and now even LIMS) and in many different indication areas.

It will be interesting to watch who will be next on Abbott’s list and how this strategy will finally work out. In the end it will depend on

– the financial muscle of Abbott,

– the fast and successful integration of all those businesses, and ultimately

– the question whether there are enough synergies to justify this broad approach.

Finally, here come some interesting details related to the Abbott story

Did you know, that...

... Abbott tried unsuccessfully to sell its core laboratory and poin-of-care diagnostics business to General Electric?

Abbott. (7/11/07). "Press Release: Abbott Announces Termination of Contract with GE". Abbott Park, IL.

... Solvay Pharmaceuticals recently acquired Innogenetics?

... the origin of Facet Biotech Corporation?
